FORFAR FIGHTING FUND
[Wednesday, 01 January 2025 15:54]

With the January transfer window now upon us, Forfar Athletic are reaching out to supporters and sponsors near and far to help us to achieve our on-field targets. We are asking for assistance to allow us to give our manager Jim Weir the best possible budget for the January transfer window and beyond. This transfer window is almost certainly the most important in the near 140 year history of Forfar Athletic, and we want to give Jim every chance of success.
We are therefore now launching our Forfar Fighting Fund, and we are inviting all of our supporters who are in a position to help us to donate either a one-off or monthly payment. Every single penny raised through the Forfar Fighting Fund will be provided to Jim Weir to strengthen our playing squad.
We are already extremely lucky to have the backing of excellent supporters and sponsors, many of whom have assisted the Loons’ cause for several years, if not decades. Their help and support is so appreciated by everyone connected with the Club.
The harsh reality however is that since the formation of the current SPFL pyramid structure, we are now in competition for our place in the SPFL with Clubs from the Lowland League and Highland League, several of which are able to outspend us in the transfer market. This is perhaps in part due to the aid of external financial backing, at a level with which we simply cannot always compete.
At the beginning of this season, the Loons’ Board provided the highest possible playing budget in the hope that the team would, at the very least, challenge at the upper end of the League 2 table. It is however no secret that this season has not gone in the direction that all at Forfar Athletic had hoped. Our position at the bottom of the SPFL led to a change of management team in November, the financial consequences of which have impacted our cash flow severely. Loons’ Directors have personally provided substantial interest free loans to the Club in recent weeks. We are now reaching out for help in trying to recover our season and to build for the Club’s future, starting with this transfer window.
Our Finance Director Raymond Hutt states “In the ten years that I have been at the Club, the financial pressures facing us have never been harder for a number of reasons. We provide our manager with the biggest budget within our means. If we did not, we would end up in a financial mess as some other lower league Clubs have recently. Jim Weir has our absolute backing and support. In order to give him the best possible foundation to turn our fortunes around, and to preserve our SPFL status, we have taken the decision to reach out by launching the Forfar Fighting Fund. The management team need to add players to the squad and we want to give them every fighting chance to do that”.
There is never a good time to ask for money, but with the grim possibility of relegation staring the Club in the face, help is needed now more than ever. Any contribution whether large or small, one-off or monthly, will allow us to immediately provide more funds to Jim to strengthen the squad.
