PREVIEW
The Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park will stage one of its most important games for some time on Saturday when Clyde are the visitors in a William Hill League2 clash.
The ‘Loons’ have picked up a hard fought and vital four points over the last week on their travels to Bonnyrigg and the Capital City but nevertheless looking forward to the visit of the ‘Bully Wee,’ manager Jim Weir frankly admits there is little room left for error as the campaign reaches the final stages.
Jim is delighted that the squad have given themselves a chance in the week ahead to certainly close the gap to some effect on the sides directly above them in the league table, but he is also well aware that it is an opportunity they must grab with both hands. Confidence is high within the group and there is no doubting the desire as evidenced over the past couple of games is there for all to see in abundance. However patience on the day will also be a key element and Jim is hopeful that the home support will also play their part once again.
There is good news on the injury front into the bargain. Josh Skelly returns to the match day squad having come through a full training session on Thursday evening unscathed, while Russell McLean will be assessed prior to kick-off. Ross MacLean and Marley Sweenie-Rowe are both still sidelined however, while Finlay Allan’s loan deal has been terminated and the youngster returns to parent club Dundee with the best wishes of all for his future in the game.
The visit of Clyde will mark the home debut for youngsters Sam Young and MacKenzie Lemon if they make the starting eleven, while home fans will without doubt give a warm welcome to the returning Danny Denholm. The management team are convinced that Danny’s experience in particular will prove a real asset in the remaining fixtures and certainly the player himself certainly appears to be relishing a return to his ‘old stomping ground.’
Clyde under the management these days of Darren Young head to Angus sitting seven points clear of the ‘Loons,’ Stuart Morrison and his colleagues however still having a game in hand. The visitors had a mixed bag of results in February month, culminating in a 2-0 home defeat from Spartans last time out.
According to our opponents social media output, both sides have recorded 33 victories in matches played over time between the sides, so a chance tomorrow for one of the teams to set up a one game advantage for the record books.
The ‘Bully Wee’ were last in town on the opening day of the league campaign, a 0-0 draw the end product of a game best forgotten, the home side triumphing 2-0 in the return fixture just before Christmas at New Douglas Park.
The Athies management and players will certainly one is sure be looking forward to home comforts tomorrow following on from three away outings, further ‘excursions’ due next week to Stranraer and Elgin. Hopefully we will set out on those lengthy journeys with a third home league win of the season in the ‘locker.’
Andy Gamble is Saturday’s man in the middle.
