Of The Loons
As some may have heard on the local ‘rumour mill’, The Loons are currently in the process of endeavouring to establish an u20/development team with a view to entering league competition for the 2026/27 season.
We have an excellent coaching team in place who have agreed to take on this initiative for the Club, working alongside our first-team management with a view to identifying the best local players to represent Forfar Athletic at this level and who will hopefully also have the ability and character to push for involvement with the first team squad.
Over the past few months, our coaches have been arranging some initial training/trial matches against more established development, club academy and local amateur teams. Performances and results have been very encouraging, particularly given that the matchday squads have been constantly evolving and many of the players have not been used to training or playing together.
At present, our coaches are focussing on 2008 age-group players. The hope is that once a settled squad is identified for the coming season, that the group of players will have more than one season together at u20 level. In addition to aiming for success in their own league, we hope that this new squad can begin to re-establish a ‘conveyer belt’ of talent to bolster the first team squad in years to come.
As with all such endeavours, everything comes at a cost and, in order to mitigate this, we are looking for any local (or not so local!) businesses who may be interested in providing some sponsorship and support for our development team. Any businesses or individuals who may be interested in this should contact Club Director, Paul Stephen, in the first instance on
C’wa the Loons!
