February - A Vital Month Ahead for the ‘Loons’
[Monday, 02 February 2026 20:02]
For many differing reasons folk are always delighted to see the back of January month and certainly Forfar Athletic fans are no different this time round. Five competitive games in the opening month of the calendar year has seen the club record two draws and disappointingly three defeats, two in the William Hill League2 and one in the KDM Evolution Trophy.
We therefore head into February still looking for our first victory of 2026 and on paper what a vital month it looks to be for all of a ‘Loons’ persuasion. Five league fixtures, four of them against the quartet of clubs sitting below us at present in the league standings and a midweek visit to the Capital City to face league leaders The Spartans, the tasty games on the ‘menu’.
The first of those matches takes place at the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday first when Dumbarton currently sitting six points adrift of the home side are the visitors. It is only just over two months back that the Athies headed home from the banks of the Clyde with a 4-1 victory under their belt against Steve Farrell’s side. Certainly a repeat performance would be more than welcome against a side who began the campaign with a five point penalty and on their previous visit to the ‘toonie’ fought back from two down to clinch a 3-2 victory.
A week later on the 14th of the month we head north to face Elgin City who will still no doubt be smarting from their 4-2 Christmas Saturday defeat from the ‘Loons’, a match in which City officials rightly or wrongly felt a few vital decisions on the day went against them. City are of course still in the Scottish Cup and have a mouth watering home clash against Partick this coming weekend in advance of Forfar’s visit.
On Tuesday the 17th of the month, the Athies have the tough test of facing up to league leaders The Spartans at the Vanloq Stadium, the match postponed on the 17th of last month due to the Edinburgh outfit’s cup commitments, all this prior to a second massive home game of the month for Jim Weir and his players on Saturday the 21st. That afternoon Annan Athletic are the visitors, the Dumfriesshire side who got a massive financial boost from their cup tie at Ibrox two weeks back currently sitting one point and one place below the Athies in the league standings, but with two games in hand.
Another busy month comes to a conclusion on the 28th with a return visit to ‘Auld Reekie’ this time Edinburgh City our opponents at the soulless Meadowbank Stadium. The ‘Citizens’ currently prop up the table but continue to make a good ‘fist’ to say the least of eradicating a fifteen point penalty levied by the SPFL due to financial problems that overcame the club last term.
Yes indeed a more than interesting quintet of matches lie ahead for Forfar Athletic in the month ahead of that there is no doubt. Let us hope that in four weeks time when we look forward to the March fixtures we are in a healthier state and maybe just maybe back challenging for a play-off spot?
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
